Cryptocurrencies have ramped up the world of digital economy to themselves deserving the attention of economists, governments, people in general, and even lawmakers in particular.

Let us start with the basics. What is a cryptocurrency anyway?

A digital currency, or cryptocurrency, is an alternative payment method developed utilizing encryption methods. By utilizing encryption technology, cryptocurrencies may act as both a medium of exchange and a virtual accounting system.

In addition to enhanced financial privacy, faster and less expensive cross-border transactions, and the possibility for financial inclusion in areas with limited access to traditional banking services are just a few benefits that cryptocurrency offers.

However, there are hazards associated with them as well, including price volatility, security issues, and regulatory difficulties.

With its promise of decentralization and transnational transactions, cryptocurrency has become the focus of the global financial industry. However, not all nations have welcomed this revolutionary technology with open arms.

Now, cryptocurrencies may be banned or highly restricted in several countries can be due to many reasons. Countries may ban cryptocurrencies due to concerns about illegal activities like money laundering and tax evasion. They worry that cryptocurrencies offer anonymity, making it hard to track such activities.

This blog goes into the factors that led certain countries to take the bold action of outlawing cryptocurrencies in an insightful analysis of regulatory environments. By dissecting the specifics and rationales of these prohibitions, we can shed light on the complexity that has influenced the global perspective on this new financial frontier.

So we are now ready to go into the list of countries that have banned the trade and holding of cryptocurrencies.

Countries That Have Banned (or heavily restricted) Cryptocurrencies

CHINA

Between 2019 and 2020, more than $50 billion in Bitcoin was transferred from East Asian accounts to locations outside the region, with a large portion of this migration coming from China, according to Chainalysis. Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies gave Chinese citizens a simpler means to buy foreign assets and get through China’s rigorous capital controls, which prohibit foreign currency transactions at $50,000 per year.

Concerns over capital flight also played a role in China’s 2017 decision to prohibit bitcoin exchanges. The stablecoin Tether (USDT), which offers stability by being ostensibly tethered to the US Dollar and is hence appealing for conversion to fiat money, has gained significant traction in China, according to Chainalysis.

Following the bitcoin prohibition, China’s “common prosperity” campaign focused on an inward-looking economic approach to control the economy and stop capital outflow. The ban aims to promote domestic wealth circulation and stop the wealthy from using offshore cryptocurrency exchanges to evade capital limits.

It may be difficult to enforce such a stringent prohibition on cryptocurrency transactions, and capital flight made possible by cryptocurrencies is likely to persist. This will eventually influence China’s economic environment.

AFGHANISTAN

Afghanistan banned cryptocurrencies in June 2022, roughly 10 months after the Taliban outfit took control of the nation.

The restriction was implemented after some Afghans used bitcoins to protect their riches and keep them safe from the Taliban. The use of cryptocurrencies to transfer money into and out of Afghanistan has grown due to the country’s isolation from the international banking system as a result of sanctions.

The Taliban wanted to keep control of the nation’s financial system by outlawing cryptocurrencies and preventing the use of digital tokens to go around established banking rules. It was a reflection of the group’s efforts to regulate monetary flows inside its recently conquered regions and to thwart actions that would jeopardize its leadership.

Additionally, Islamic financial norms had an impact on the Taliban’s view of cryptocurrency. They had said in February that they would research whether digital tokens might be permitted under Islamic banking principles as they looked at ways to boost the faltering economy of the nation. The latter prohibition, however, showed that they had chosen to forbid such acts under the given situation.

QATAR

Since 2018, cryptocurrency use has been prohibited at the Qatar Financial Center. According to the nation, this was done to “ensure the safety of the financial and banking system”. The nation also outlawed bitcoin trading the same year, claiming it was highly volatile and vulnerable to hacking, and warned that businesses engaging in it would face sanctions.

The prohibition was also a result of lax compliance with the anti-money laundering and know-your-customer (KYC) laws. The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) is responsible for enforcing these laws around the world.

They call for banks and other financial service providers to confirm the identities of their clients and identify the sources of the money they are transferring domestically and internationally.

In fact, after the country’s first exchange, CoinMENA, which opened for business in May 2022, the Qatari Central Bank quickly issued a warning to its citizens about doing business with any unregulated financial institution.

TURKEY

Significant hazards linked with digital tokens were listed as the absence of supervision, control, and central regulatory authority, the potential for criminal behavior, and excessive market volatility.

The action was taken since complaints in Turkey mentioning cryptocurrencies considerably increased. Despite the ban, Turkish investors kept investing in cryptocurrencies and stocks after they sold some foreign exchange assets as a result of the central bank governor’s resignation, which caused the lira to weaken.

Between March 20 and 24, 2021, the amount of cryptocurrency traded more than tripled, from around $1 billion to $2.8 billion. The head of Turkey’s largest opposition party criticized the prohibition, pointing out that bitcoin users had not been consulted beforehand.

Although the rule primarily targeted electronic payment methods, some cryptocurrency sites claimed that consumers could still invest in virtual currencies with no trouble.

MOROCCO

The Moroccan Exchange Office informed the public through a press release published on its official website that transactions carried out using virtual currencies are against the rules governing the exchange and are subject to the penalties and fines stipulated by the texts in effect.

The Office urged the parties involved to adhere to the exchange regulations, which state that money transfers to foreign companies must be handled through authorized middlemen and only with foreign currencies listed by the Bank Al-Maghrib.

The press release also highlights the dangers of using a virtual payment system that is not supported by a financial institution. The release concludes by stating that the Exchange Office is closely monitoring the development of virtual currencies in Morocco along with the Bank of Al-Maghrib and the Professional Grouping of the Banks of Morocco.

NORTH MACEDONIA

Since 2016, North Macedonia has been the first nation in Europe to outright outlaw the use of cryptocurrencies. It is not very hostile towards the use of this digital currency but wants to help itself to a safer stand unless and until a clear understanding of crypto arises out of experience.

But at the moment the ban remains with the nation being subtly eerie of the idea of putting crypto to regular use.

NEPAL

According to Nepal’s 1964 Act on Restricting Investment Abroad, the prohibition extends to cryptocurrency investments as well. The Foreign Exchange Regulation Act and FITTA both seek to encourage the use of foreign currency for trade, investment, and the transfer of technology. They have a total of five scopes.

The “Regulations of Foreign-Related Transactions” and “Use of Foreign Exchange Investment and Technology Transfer” scopes provide the biggest obstacles to cryptocurrency transactions and regulation. In essence, they are in favor of outlawing cryptocurrencies and their applications.

Conclusion

Several issues, including worries about financial crime, the speculative character of digital assets, and possible hazards to their financial systems, have contributed to certain nations’ choices to outlaw cryptocurrencies.

These causes include concerns about these countries’ financial systems. The necessity to establish control over financial activity and difficulties with capital flight have also been factors in the development of these regulatory measures.

However, the sector has a chance to more fluidly conform rules and address the issues identified by governments thanks to the cryptocurrency industry’s ongoing evolution.

As the technology develops, regulatory agencies and crypto enthusiasts may collaborate to find a balance between innovation and compliance.

Trustless Transactions: DeFi utilizes smart contracts to automate and execute transactions without the need for intermediaries. These contracts are self-executing and verifiable, providing trust and security without relying on a centralized authority.

Global Accessibility: DeFi protocols are accessible to anyone with an internet connection, enabling individuals from all corners of the world to participate in financial activities. This inclusivity is particularly valuable for the unbanked or underbanked populations who can now access financial services without the need for a traditional bank account.

Decentralized Exchanges: DeFi platforms offer decentralized exchanges (DEXs) that allow users to trade digital assets directly with each other. DEXs eliminate the need for intermediaries like traditional exchanges, providing users with greater control over their funds and reducing the risk of hacking or manipulation.

Lending and Borrowing: DeFi enables peer-to-peer lending and borrowing, allowing individuals to lend out their cryptocurrencies and earn interest or borrow funds using their digital assets as collateral. This opens up new opportunities for individuals to access capital or generate passive income.

Yield Farming: Yield farming is a popular practice in DeFi where users can earn additional tokens by providing liquidity to decentralized exchanges or lending platforms. This incentivizes participation in the ecosystem and can result in high yields for those willing to take on the associated risks.

This is how stats reflect the growth of DeFi

Decentralized Finance has rapidly emerged as a revolutionary force in the financial world, but its roots trace back to the early days of blockchain technology. To understand the evolution and significance of DeFi in 2023, let’s take a journey through its brief history.

The foundations of decentralized finance were laid with the launch of Bitcoin, the pioneering cryptocurrency, in 2009. Bitcoin introduced the concept of a decentralized digital currency, operating on a peer-to-peer network, and removing the need for intermediaries like banks.

In 2015, Ethereum, a blockchain platform with smart contract functionality, took the concept further by enabling the development of decentralized applications (dApps). Smart contracts are self-executing agreements that automatically execute predefined terms once certain conditions are met.

Ethereum’s programmable blockchain allowed developers to create a wide range of decentralized applications, opening the door for what would later become DeFi.

Ethereum – Pioneering Decentralized Finance Transactions

The first DeFi project to gain significant attention was MakerDAO, which launched in 2017. MakerDAO introduced the concept of decentralized stablecoins, specifically DAI, which is designed to maintain a stable value relative to the US dollar. It achieved stability through a combination of smart contracts and collateralization with other cryptocurrencies, providing a reliable decentralized alternative to traditional fiat-backed stablecoins.

In the following years, the DeFi landscape began to rapidly expand.

In 2019, Compound, a decentralized lending and borrowing protocol, gained prominence. It allowed users to earn interest on their cryptocurrencies by lending them out, while borrowers could access funds by providing collateral. Compound introduced the concept of algorithmic interest rates and laid the groundwork for decentralized money markets.

As we enter 2023, DeFi has become an established sector within the broader cryptocurrency and blockchain ecosystem. It encompasses a wide range of financial services, including lending, borrowing, decentralized exchanges, derivatives, insurance, and more.

In conclusion, the history of DeFi is a story of innovation, experimentation, and disruption.

How Prominent Is DeFi in Today’s World?

One of the key factors contributing to the prominence of DeFi is its ability to address long-standing inefficiencies and limitations of traditional financial systems.

The growth and adoption of DeFi have been nothing short of remarkable.

In recent years, the total value locked (TVL) in DeFi protocols has surged past significant milestones. In 2021, the TVL surpassed $100 billion, and by 2023, it exceeded $200 billion, highlighting the confidence and capital flowing into the DeFi ecosystem.

This growth is further reflected in the increasing number of unique DeFi wallet addresses, which surpassed 10 million in 2023.

DeFi’s prominence is also evident in the exponential growth of decentralized exchanges (DEXs). These platforms enable users to trade cryptocurrencies directly, without the need for a centralized intermediary. In 2021, the monthly trading volume on DEXs exceeded $100 billion, and by 2023, it reached an impressive $200 billion.

So overall, DeFi has attained remarkable prominence in today’s world, revolutionizing the way we think about finance.

DeFi (Decentralized Finance) and CeFi (Centralized Finance) are two distinct paradigms in the financial industry, each with its own set of characteristics, benefits, and limitations.

Let’s explore the key differences between DeFi and CeFi in detail:

Control and Ownership

DeFi: In DeFi, users have full control over their assets and funds. Transactions and interactions with DeFi protocols are executed through smart contracts on decentralized blockchain networks. Users manage their private keys, which gives them sole ownership and access to their assets.

CeFi: In contrast, CeFi platforms are centralized entities that hold and manage user funds. Users typically create accounts on these platforms, and their assets are stored within the platform’s infrastructure. The platform acts as a custodian, which means users are entrusting their funds to the platform’s control.

Access and Global Reach

DeFi: DeFi applications and services are accessible to anyone with an internet connection and a compatible digital wallet. They are permission-less and available to users globally without restrictions.

CeFi: CeFi platforms may have geographic restrictions, and users often need to go through a KYC (Know Your Customer) process to access their services. Some platforms may not be available in certain countries due to regulatory constraints.

Innovation and Flexibility

DeFi: DeFi platforms are highly innovative, as they are built on open-source protocols, allowing developers to create and integrate new financial products and services seamlessly. This results in a rapidly evolving DeFi ecosystem.

CeFi: While CeFi platforms can innovate to a certain extent, their development and implementation of new features often require centralized decision-making and may take longer to materialize.

Security and Risks

DeFi: Security in DeFi primarily relies on the correctness and robustness of smart contracts. However, vulnerabilities in smart contracts can lead to potential risks, such as hacking and exploits. Auditing and testing of smart contracts are crucial to minimize these risks.

CeFi: CeFi platforms typically have more established security measures and may offer insurance or compensation in case of security breaches. Users also benefit from customer support and assistance in case of account-related issues.

Regulation and Compliance

DeFi: DeFi operates in a relatively unregulated space, which allows for more freedom but may also expose users to potential risks without legal recourse.

CeFi: CeFi platforms are subject to various financial regulations, providing users with certain levels of protection but also limiting the scope of services and geographic reach.

In summary, DeFi and CeFi represent two fundamentally different approaches to financial services. DeFi offers decentralization, autonomy, and innovation, while CeFi provides a more familiar and regulated environment with added customer support and security.

Why Being Decentralized Is More Beneficial For Finance Than Centralized

When comparing decentralized and centralized systems within the realm of finance, it becomes evident that decentralization brings forth a multitude of benefits that can revolutionize the way we interact with our financial resources.

The key advantage of decentralized finance (DeFi) lies in its ability to eliminate the need for intermediaries and put individuals in full control of their assets. Unlike centralized systems, which rely on trusted third parties like banks or financial institutions to facilitate transactions and manage funds, DeFi operates on blockchain networks, ensuring autonomy.

Decentralization also promotes financial sovereignty by granting individuals full control over their assets. With DeFi, users hold private keys to their wallets, allowing them to transact directly without relying on intermediaries. This eliminates the risks associated with centralized platforms, such as account freezes, censorship, or the loss of funds due to hacking or malfeasance.

In summary, decentralization in finance brings numerous benefits that enhance user empowerment, inclusivity, security, and innovation.

Will the centralized finance system ultimately fail?

It’s a thought-provoking question that arises when we examine the rise of decentralized finance (DeFi) and its potential to disrupt traditional financial systems.

While it is tough to definitively predict the future, the growing trends in cryptocurrency and the unstoppable momentum of DeFi make it an intriguing possibility worth exploring.

The centralized finance system, as we know it, has long relied on intermediaries to facilitate transactions, maintain records, and manage the flow of funds. These intermediaries have acted as gatekeepers, holding authority over our money and dictating the rules of the financial game.

However, this system has faced its fair share of challenges and criticisms.

One of the inherent flaws of centralized finance is its vulnerability to manipulation and abuse. The financial crisis of 2008 exposed the risks associated with concentrated power and opaque practices within the banking industry.

Enter decentralized finance, a revolutionary concept that leverages blockchain technology to create a decentralized financial ecosystem. DeFi operates on open, permissionless networks like Ethereum, where smart contracts autonomously execute transactions and eliminate the need for intermediaries.

Nonetheless, the ongoing growth and adoption of cryptocurrencies, the increasing institutional interest, and the thriving DeFi ecosystem suggest that the centralized finance system may face significant disruption in the coming years.

The momentum is undeniable, and as technology advances and blockchain networks mature, the appeal of decentralized finance will likely continue to grow.

Pros & Cons of Decentralized Finance

Decentralized finance, or DeFi, has emerged as a transformative force in the financial world, bringing about numerous advantages and opportunities.

However, like any disruptive innovation, it also presents certain challenges and risks.

Pros of DeFi:

Financial Inclusion: DeFi opens up access to financial services for individuals who are unbanked or underbanked, allowing them to participate in lending, borrowing, and investment activities without relying on traditional financial institutions.

Peer-to-Peer Transactions: DeFi protocols facilitate direct peer-to-peer transactions, eliminating the need for intermediaries like banks or payment processors. This enhances efficiency, reduces costs, and enables faster settlement times.

Transparency and Audibility: Blockchain technology underlying DeFi offers transparency and immutability. All transactions and smart contracts are recorded on the blockchain, providing verifiable and auditable information for participants.

Enhanced Security: DeFi leverages cryptographic techniques and decentralized architecture, making it less susceptible to hacks and fraud. With user-owned private keys and secure smart contracts, DeFi platforms can enhance security and protect users’ assets.

Yield Opportunities: DeFi introduces various opportunities to earn yields through activities like staking, liquidity providing, and yield farming. Users can generate passive income by leveraging their digital assets in DeFi protocols.

Cons of DeFi:

Smart Contract Risks: Smart contracts, while programmable and autonomous, can still be vulnerable to coding bugs or exploits. If not audited or implemented correctly, these vulnerabilities can be exploited, resulting in financial losses.

Regulatory Uncertainty: DeFi operates in a relatively nascent regulatory landscape. The absence of clear regulations and oversight can create uncertainty and potential legal challenges for users and projects within the DeFi space.

Market Volatility: DeFi is highly intertwined with cryptocurrency markets, which are known for their volatility. Sudden price fluctuations can impact the value of assets within DeFi protocols, affecting users’ investments and yields.

User Responsibility: As DeFi puts users in control of their assets, it also comes with the responsibility of managing private keys securely and making informed decisions. Users must exercise caution when interacting with DeFi protocols to avoid potential scams or fraudulent schemes.

Scalability Challenges: The scalability of DeFi protocols, particularly those built on Ethereum, can be a limitation. As user activity increases, network congestion and high gas fees may impede the efficiency and accessibility of DeFi applications.

While DeFi presents exciting opportunities for financial empowerment and innovation, it is crucial to be mindful of the risks involved and make informed decisions when participating in this dynamic ecosystem.

An NFT or Non-Fungible Token is a unique digital token that represents ownership of a digital asset. Sounds complicated, doesn’t it?

Think of the NFT as a property ownership certificate that shows the location of a particular property and the ownership details. People have deeds, each of which is unique and tailored to a particular property.

When you exchange a property ownership certificate with someone, you also exchange the property with it. Let’s place this in the context of an NFT.

The NFT is a digital certificate of digital assets, much like a certificate corresponding to a particular property. This asset can be a music file, a collectible, a graphic, an artwork, a sports trading card, or digital merchandise.

Read our blog on ‘Get started with NFTs’ to know more.

In the Sports NFT world, NFTs are most commonly referred to as collectibles because each token is different, like a baseball card.

How are Sports brands worldwide invested in Sports and NFTs?

The relationship between Sports and NFTs is a linear one? The amount invested by sports brands in this space has a proportional effect on the popularity of NFTs. Judging by the number of sports brands and athletes involved in the game, it seems that NFTs are the hottest thing right now.

So, what is driving the popularity of Sports NFTs?

Generation Z audiences influence the sport as today they have the freedom to co-create something special with brands. They connect and interact with their favourite brands. Industry reports indicate that 39% of sports fans are aware of cryptocurrencies, which is significantly higher than the general population. 24% of these fans expressed interest in NFTs.

Sports fans trust athletes who are influencers. 26% of fans see athletes as a great way to connect with brands.

Athletes involved in the growing NFT market. Here are a few examples –

Simple Steps to buy Sports NFTs on a marketplace

Buying sports NFTs typically involves a few steps, but the process can vary depending on the specific NFT and platform you are interested in. Here are some general steps to follow –

Choose a platform:

There are many platforms that offer sports NFTs, including NBA Top Shot, Sorare, and Rarible, among others. Choose a platform that offers the sports NFTs you are interested in and create an account.

Set up a digital wallet:

To buy NFTs, you will typically need a digital wallet that supports the specific blockchain used by the platform you are buying from (such as Ethereum). Popular digital wallets include MetaMask and Coinbase Wallet.

Add funds to your wallet:

You will need to add funds to your digital wallet to purchase NFTs. This usually involves buying cryptocurrency, such as Ethereum or Bitcoin, and transferring it to your wallet.

Browse and select NFTs:

Once you have set up your wallet and added funds, you can browse the platform’s collection of sports NFTs and select the ones you want to buy. Each NFT will have a unique identifier and price.

Purchase the NFT:

To purchase an NFT, you will typically need to submit a transaction through your digital wallet. This will involve approving the transaction and paying the required amount of cryptocurrency for the NFT.

Receive your NFT:

Once your transaction is confirmed on the blockchain, you will receive the NFT in your digital wallet. You can then view it, transfer it to another wallet, or hold onto it as a collectible.

Keep in mind that the exact process for buying sports NFTs can vary depending on the platform and specific NFT, so be sure to read the instructions carefully and follow the steps provided by the platform.

Also, be aware that the value of NFTs can fluctuate greatly, so it’s important to do your research and invest wisely.

Brands, establishments and their NFTs

Several sports brands have started to invest in non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in recent years. Here are a few examples:

NBA

The National Basketball Association (NBA) was one of the first sports organizations to explore the potential of NFTs. In 2019, the NBA partnered with Dapper Labs to launch NBA Top Shot, a blockchain-based platform that allows fans to buy, sell, and trade officially licensed NBA collectibles.

NFL

The National Football League (NFL) has also entered the NFT market. In 2021, the NFL partnered with Sorare, a blockchain-based fantasy soccer game, to create official NFL NFTs.

UFC

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has partnered with Dapper Labs to launch UFC Fan Token, a blockchain-based platform that allows fans to buy, sell, and trade UFC collectibles.

Adidas

Adidas has also invested in NFTs. In 2021, the company partnered with Bored Ape Yacht Club, a popular NFT project, to release a limited edition line of sneakers that were only available to owners of certain Bored Ape NFTs.

Nike

Nike has not yet invested in NFTs directly, but the company has shown an interest in the technology. In 2019, Nike was granted a patent for a blockchain-based system for authenticating sneakers. The system could potentially be used to create NFTs that represent limited edition sneakers.

The reasons for sports brands to invest in NFTs are varied. Some see it as a way to engage fans and create new revenue streams. Others see it as a way to authenticate and track merchandise, combat counterfeiting, and protect intellectual property. Additionally, NFTs allow sports organizations to experiment with blockchain technology and explore new ways of interacting with fans.

Ferrari has shown interest in the blockchain and cryptocurrency space. In June 2021, Ferrari’s parent company, Exor, invested $200 million in Bitcoin, and the company’s Chairman, John Elkann, has spoken positively about the potential of blockchain technology.

Sports NFTs worldwide

Besides USA, Sports NFTs are gaining popularity in Asia, especially in countries like China, South Korea, and Japan. The NFT market in Asia is rapidly growing and expanding, and sports NFTs are a part of this trend.

In China, for example, there is a strong interest in soccer and basketball, and the NFT market for these sports is growing quickly. The Chinese Super League has launched its own NFT platform, and there are several Chinese companies that are producing sports-related NFTs, such as 4DReplay, which creates digital collectibles featuring basketball players.

In South Korea, there is also a growing interest in sports NFTs, especially for soccer and baseball. The K League, which is the professional soccer league in South Korea, has launched its own NFT platform, and there are several companies that are producing NFTs related to popular Korean baseball teams.

In Japan, there is a long history of collectibles and a strong interest in sports, making the country a natural fit for sports NFTs. The NFT market in Japan is still relatively new, but there are already several companies that are producing sports-related NFTs, such as the J League, which is the professional soccer league in Japan.

Overall, sports NFTs are gaining popularity in Asia as more sports leagues and organizations embrace this emerging technology and as fans become more interested in collecting digital assets related to their favorite teams and players. As the market for NFTs continues to grow, it is likely that we will see even more interest and investment in sports NFTs from Asia and other parts of the world.

Conclusion

It is difficult to provide an exact share of sports NFTs in the overall NFT market, as the market is still evolving and data on specific sectors within the market is not always readily available. However, sports NFTs have been a significant and growing part of the overall NFT market in recent years.

According to NonFungible.com, the category of sports and gaming NFTs accounted for 13% of the total NFT market in 2020, with a total value of $32 million. This includes collectibles, game assets, and other types of NFTs related to sports and gaming.

In 2021, the share of sports NFTs in the overall NFT market is likely to have increased significantly, as several major sports leagues and brands have entered the NFT space. The NBA’s Top Shot platform, for example, has become one of the most popular NFT projects, with over $700 million in sales volume as of August 2021. Similarly, the NFL’s partnership with Sorare and the UFC’s partnership with Dapper Labs have both helped to bring more sports NFTs to market.

Overall, the share of sports NFTs in the overall NFT market is likely to continue to grow as more sports organizations and brands enter the space and as NFTs become increasingly mainstream.

The growth of NFTs can be attributed to several factors, including the increasing mainstream acceptance of blockchain technology, the rise of cryptocurrency, and the ability of NFTs to offer unique and verifiable ownership of digital assets. NFTs have also been embraced by artists, musicians, and other creators as a way to monetize their work and engage with fans in new and innovative ways.

Altcoins are a term commonly used to refer to any cryptocurrency that is not Bitcoin. “Alt” stands for alternative, so altcoins are essentially alternative digital currencies.

Bitcoin was the first and most well-known cryptocurrency, but since its introduction, thousands of other cryptocurrencies have been created, each with its unique features, purposes, and technologies.

Altcoins can serve different purposes. In this article, we will discuss all that.

The Nuances Of The Altcoins Market

The cryptocurrency market is currently in a tailspin and no one can predict which crypto will go where. Crypto analysts are grappling with predictions concerning changes in cryptocurrency prices, such as the clasp of a bear market. At this moment, you can only look at the fundamental aspects of a crypto coin to determine whether to buy it or not. Coins with only sound fundamentals will survive the bear market or fall in line for a correction in the long run. Well, who knows!

Everything booms in a bull market even meme coins (those that originated from a meme). The bear market is where the real deal is. Coins that survive bear markets or undergo market corrections are usually the best coins to invest in – an indication of their ability to survive during downturns. As a result, 90% of the coins will get destroyed during a bear market and will be replaced by new coins.

A significant dip in prices is considered the best time to buy. But you have to consider this – We don’t know when the markets will recover, it may take months maybe even years. With the current geopolitical scenario, it can be said with certainty that markets won’t recover shortly future.

The Altcoins In The Cryptocurrency Market

In the meantime what can be done? – Speculation based on research.

Determine where you’d like to invest. If you don’t know where to start. In this blog, we take a deeper look at some of the coins you could look out for. Many of these coins that are listed here are termed Altcoins (coins apart from Bitcoin and Ethereum).

Vulcan Forged (PYR) – Popular Altcoins

(axieinfinity.com)

Axie Infinity is a Play-to-Earn gaming platform with a digital avatar called “Axies”. Players can own and breed Axies and fightAxesr Axies to earn rewards.

Avalanche (AVAX)

Avalanche is a blockchain system that tackles scalability, security, and decentralization. It was launched in September 2020. Its speed, adaptability, affordability, and accessibility have addressed key concerns in the cryptocurrency industry.

By deploying Avalanche, any smart contract-enabled Decentralized Application (dApp) may surpass its competitors. Avalanche works similarly to Ethereum in terms of functionality. It uses the Proof of Stake (PoS) consensus process, similar to what Ethereum is currently migrating.

Avalanche has recently been plummeting because of its association with LUNA (LUNA is the native token of Terra, a blockchain by Terraform Labs)

which faced a crash as well. AVAX is also going down as a result of the bearish sentiment in the market but the coin has immense potential when it comes to De-Fi (Decentralized Finance). De-Fi is an emerging financial technology based on secure distributed ledgers.

AVAX is currently priced at around $27.

Gala Games (GALA)

(app.gala.games)

Gala is a decentralized game and metaverse project built on the Ethereum blockchain. This project aims to bring control back into the hands of the community. Gala wants users to determine the direction offavoritevourite games, rather than letting the developers guide them. All games are immersive and comprehensive, so anyone can play them. It also includes the use of NFTs, as players own all the items they receive. This means that players can exchange and sell items at any time inside and outside the GALA platform.

Gala uses the Founder Node voting mechanism to encourage the community to make decisions to plan the game. Gala has released its groundbreaking game Town Star and NFTs undcollectiblesctables.

Gala Games is currently valued at $.80 per coin.

Elrond (EGLD)

(elrond.com)

Elrond is a blockchain platform focusing on improved blockchain speed, scale, cost, and user experience. Its in-house token is called Elrond eGold or EGLD.

It uses a SPoS, Secure Proof of Stake consensus mechanism. Not only is it an energy-eff nutrient, but it also guarantees long-term security and distributed equity. It helps eGold staking verifiers protect their networks and earn rewards. By supporting the most popular programming languages and flexible tools, the smart contract platform features an easy-to-integrate blockchain with unmatched scalability, speed, and low transaction costs.

The price of the EGLD is currently $83.85. About 22 million EGLD coins are in circulation, and the maximum supply is about 31.4 million.

Finally, How To Buy And Trade Altcoins?

(coindcx.com)

Now that you have an understanding of various altcoins, let us see how to buy and trade them –

Get on an exchange. Exchanges Binance and Coin DCX are a gateway to buying cryptos.

Once you have the exchange App on your smartphone or laptop, complete the process that involves KYC.

After your account has been made you can transfer fiat currency, whose value is backed by the government, to your exchange wallet. There are many options to transfer fiat currency, for example, UPI, Net, banking, etc. Different exchanges facilitate a different variety of transfer methods.

Once you have fiat in your wallet you can now start buying the coins that you desire and also trade them.

Cryptocurrency is a new and volatile investment, and investors must have a long-term view, and avoid any rash decisions each time there is a price swing.

We are rapidly approaching the futuristic era of the Metaverse.

The Metaverse can be defined as an interconnected, permanent virtual reality where we live a digital life along with a physical life. Virtual real estate in the metaverse is the new hot topic these days.

Virtual real estate may not sound valuable, but when you know how many tech giants have invested in virtual real estate and the metaverse in general, you may start taking this more seriously. If not doing so already.

The Metaverse is the ‘digital twin’ of your physical world. In the Metaverse, you can invest and make money as in the real world. One of these investment opportunities is in real estate.

Virtual Real Estate In The Metaverse

(source: TIME Magazine)

The metaverse is a virtual world where people and establishments across the globe can interact with each other, and conduct business transactions similar to the real world but with digital platforms and digital assets.

The Metaverse is made up of real estate segments known as land parcels which act as plots of land in the virtual world. Individuals and corporates can buy these land parcels using cryptocurrency. This is basically what virtual real estate is.

For e.g., on Decentraland, a metaverse website, land can be bought using the cryptocurrency token ‘MANA’.

                                                                                                                                Decentraland for Metaverse

Over the last few months, investors have spent millions of dollars purchasing land in the Metaverse. There is no denying that technology has changed the way real estate operates. A whole new ecosystem has emerged – there are even mortgage providers and lenders who cater to customers purchasing virtual real estate.

The Metaverse adds a different perspective to the value of land with factors that are different from the real word. Land is valued in the real world based on factors namely size, location, and actual utility.

However, in the Metaverse the use of land is less significant as people will not actually live there.

The primary purpose of purchasing land in the Metaverse is to either develop it or rent it to someone else in order to earn what is called passive income. In the years ahead, passive income will extrapolate to active income.

In the Metaverse, unlike in the real world, anyone can invest. Anyone can buy land parcels as they are available at various prices, shapes, sizes etc.

Buyers around the world can activate a cryptocurrency wallet of their choice and start investing immediately. There are no barriers and limitations to buying micro lots- as they are accessible and affordable.

The Metaverse will inevitably expand.

It has gained momentum, and its growing popularity is a big plus. It may seem like a high-risk investment today, but it does not stop the early adopter from taking the leap of faith. Companies such Atari, Samsung, Adidas, and PwC have invested in digital real estate to prepare for the future.

As more land becomes available, there is strong pressure to rethink the actual activity of digital real estate. For example, trade fairs and exhibitions are held in the Metaverse with major venues, sponsorships, and booths driving monetization.

It will be an immersive experience with hands-on interaction that does not require travel or commuting. Similarly, social gatherings, weddings and collaborations can be transferred to the Metaverse using digital real estate.

Significant Land Purchase Trends In The Metaverse

The following are some of the top digital real estate trends for this year:

Metaverse land sales are reported to reach a record $ 500 million in 2021. By 2022, sales could more than double to at least $ 1billion.

Markets continue to be volatile and fluctuate in response to socio and economic factors.

Events are a sure bet. Metaverse platforms have their own event calendars, and Meta’s (parent company of Facebook) Horizon Venues are now widely available. As a result, we will witness more real estate events in the near future.

Brand categories can accentuate immersive experiences. Categories such as real-estate work well in the metaverse as they can bring alive an experience like no other. These experiences can trigger the sale of virtual experience.

Why Is Real Estate Hot In The Metaverse?

It is human tendency to be able to own something. Just like people want to own real estate in the real world they want to do it in the virtual world as it gives them a sense of ownership.

Many people believe that in the future humans will spend most of their time in a virtual world. When you are spending so much time you want your digital avatar to have a space to call home right?

The easiest explanation is FOMO or fear of missing out. Just because someone else is buying this new cool piece on land in a virtual space, others get influenced to buy the same as they fear they will miss out on a generational opportunity.

People think buying early and buying smart will give them an upper have over late comers or late adopters.

Owning real estate next to a well-known celebrity such as Snoop Dogg also influences people to buy virtual land. Here, location is key and if you nail the location you can earn much more rent on your land and also be able to resell it at a huge premium.

It is human tendency to have a sense of ownership. Just like people want to own real estate in the real world, they want to do so in the virtual world as it gives them a sense of ownership.

Futurists believe that in the future, humans will spend most of their time in a virtual world. When you are spending so much time in the Metaverse, you want your digital avatar to have a space to call home, right?

People think buying early is buying smart, and will give them a social advantage over late adopters.

Owning real estate next to a well-known celebrity such as Snoop Dogg also influences people to buy virtual land. Here, location is key, and if you nail the location, you can earn much more rent on your land and also be able to resell it at a premium.

How Can One Purchase Land In The Metaverse?

You need to identify where you want to buy the land – is it in Decentreland, Axie infinity or VulcanVerse or somewhere else?

Accordingly, you need the selected Metaverse’s token to be able to buy land. Suppose you want to buy land in Decentreland then you need to have MANA, the currency in Decentreland. You can buy these currencies off exchanges such as Binance or decentralized exchanges such as SushiSwap.

To store the currency you need a wallet- which can be a Metamask or a Binance wallet.

Using the currency that you now have, you can visit the website of the Metaverse and check for land sale dates for lower prices.

Land is allotted to you in the form of an NFT. The Metaverse also has a primary and secondary real estate market. You can further use websites such as opensea.io or nonfungible.com to buy land from the secondary market. These websites act as real estate agents. Prices here will be bit higher than the original land sales.

After you have bought a piece of land you can do anything you want with it – build a house, build a theme park, host other people, rent the land out, sell it for a profit etc.

While buying land, you need to check certain things such as footfall in nearby areas, location of the land, the terrain, accessibility etc.

Notable Vitual Real Estate Transactions

Republic Realm paid a record $4.3 million for properties in Sandbox, the largest Metaverse real estate platform. The company has developed 100 Fantasy islands, which have their own villas. 90 islands sold for $15,000 each on the first day, and some are currently resold for over $100,000.

Toronto-based Tokens.com CEO, Andrew Kiguel, has raised $16 million to invest in Metaverse real estate. Almost all of it was used to buy land. The company alsospent $2.4 million on land in Decentraland’s fashion district, a hotspot for fashion events and stores.

In December 2021, a fan of the musician Snoop Dogg paid $450,000 to purchase land in the Metaverse next to Dogg’s virtual property.

The Future Of Virtual Real Estate In The Metaverse

At first glance, the concept of owning virtual land may seem unbelievable. But even though it now appears overwhelming and unbelievable, it’s important to remember that many people used to question the potential importance of the Internet and then social media. According to experts, in the next few years Metaverse will evolve into a fully functional economy, providing a synchronised digital experience that is as integrated into everyday life as today’s email and social media. Many futurists are betting on this new immersive world.

In the recent past, Dogecoin has gone viral, to become one of the most popular cryptocurrencies. According to ICO analytics, it was the most talked-about digital currency on Twitter in February 2021, a favorite meme and topic of many, including Elon Musk.

This blog talks about the origin of Dogecoin, how it gained popularity, its performance among other cryptos, and its future.

What Is Dogecoin?

                                                                                              What is Dogecoin?

Dogecoin (DOGE) is an open-source, peer-to-peer cryptocurrency. It’s considered an almost-sarcastic meme coin and an altcoin. Launched in 2013 December, it has an image of the Shiba-Inu- dog as the logo.

While it was seemingly created as a joke, its blockchain has some merit.

The underlying technology behind this crypto is Liteon.

The notable features of the cryptocurrency that uses the scrypt algorithm are its unlimited supply and low price.

The Origin of Dogecoin

It was founded as a joke in December 2013 based on a popular meme of the Doge. Since the joke truly caught on, the digital currency market cap has grown to $7 billion.

The Meaning Of A ‘Doge’

The Doge is an inspiration from an internet meme of a Japanese dog breed called Shiba Inu (Shibe). The meme consists of a Shiba Inu dog picture accompanied in the backgrounds supported by a multicolored text.

Jackson Palmer, the founder, used it as a joke to combine to most popular trends at that time, the cryptocurrency and the dog.

In his tweet, he noted,” Investing in Dogecoin is the next big thing.” that tweet received a lot of focus. He later bought dogecoin.com, uploading a photoshopped image of a coin with a Shibe on it.

The viral website and tweet caught the attention of IBM engineer Billy Markus. He contacted Palmer to help make Dogecoin a real cryptocurrency. Despite Palmers’s late response, he immediately began the project that took three hours, and set up Dogecoin live over his lunch break.

Both Palmer and Markus didn’t believe this cryptocurrency could take off.

How Dogecoin Became Popular

Dogecoin originally went live in Dec 2013, becoming an instant hit in the crypto community. The crypto was comical and could be mined easily at a fraction of a cent. The outrageousness of its creation was a welcomed breath to those who wanted to play freely with cryptocurrency.

Within two weeks, Reddit channel users were over 19,000, making doges price skyrocket by 300%, despite China’s announcement against payment companies dealing with Bitcoin.

A Caring And Real Utility Community

In 2014, the DOGE community eagerly wanted to prove that cryptocurrency has real-world utility. They began raising funds under DOGE donations to support a range of charitable and sporting causes.

They first raised $30,000 in a few hours to send Jamaicans to the bobsled team to the 2014 Olympics in China.

Various mainstream news outlets helped broadcast crypto projects worldwide. By mid-January, the DOGEdaily transaction volumes overtook Bitcoin briefly and other cryptocurrencies.

Another initiative, “Doge4Kids,” began in January, raising $30,000 for a charity that provides service dogs to children with special needs.

In March 2014, the Dogecoin community-supported Charity water project contributed $50,000 to build water- facilities in Kenya. This generous donation allowed a US-based NGO to build two water wells in the country.

Celebrity Dogecoin Supporters

Another major reason for the global popularity is the growing influential celebrity endorsers that voice their support openly for Shiba Inu-themed crypto on social media. This list includes Netflix’s star Carole Baskin, former bodybuilder Kai Greene, Kiss singer Gene Simons, and American rappers Lil Yachty and Snoop Dogg.

However, the most notable Dogecoin endorsement was by Tesla’s Elon Musk.

Therefore, it became popular due to its selfless community, real-world utility, and light-hearted origin.

In the last few years, it has become a crypto avatar for the meme culture supported by internet personalities such as Elon Musk and online communities. As the culture’s influence rises, DOGE’s value has skyrocketed, taking a life its founders never intended.

How Does Dogecoin Fair Among Other Cryptocurrencies

According to Forbes Advisor, Dogecoin is the 10th among the top cryptocurrencies in November 2021. It has a market cap of over $38 billion, and its price by the end of October 2021 was $0.29.

Is There A Difference Between Dogecoin And Other Cryptocurrencies?

Cryptocurrency can be created for various purposes and may occupy different parts of the crypto universe. Below are some differences between Ethereum, Dogecoin, and Bitcoin, each with a maximum number of coins and a distinct purpose.

Cryptocurrency Purpose

Each of the three cryptocurrencies was launched for a different purpose. Dogecoin notably was a satire on the rising Bitcoins popularity and its doge meme featuring charismatic Shiba Inu.

However, Ethereum and Bitcoin are created for a more serious purpose, including acting as a store of value and facilitating transactions.

Market Capitalization

Market capitalization consists of the total extant coins multiplied by the current trading price. Bitcoin has the highest market cap, with Ethereum at a distant second, while DOGE is among the top 10 digital currencies, according to CoinMarketCap. The trader cluster around the most popular crypto and the value drop significantly for those below the top 20.

While the currencies are among the most popular among traders, Bitcoin has emerged as mainstream due to ease of access and various ways to store or purchase the currency.

Coin Issuance

It’s critical to note the coins that can be issued on each cryptocurrency. Most trades flock to BTC due to its hard issuance limit of $ 21 million.

If demand rises and money flows into BTC, the fixed limit ensures the price rises over time. While it may be good for traders, it makes Bitcoin difficult to use as currency.

In contrast, Ethereum is unlimited in issuance but has a fixed issuance schedule that can slow the production of other coins. Meanwhile, Doge production is unlimited as part of the joke.

Unlimited issuance hasn’t stifled the skyrocketing of the crypto in 2021. From around half a penny in Jan, the price rose to $0.32 by the end of April.

The Future of Dogecoin As Indicated By the Experts

Finder, a comparison website for products, published the July 2021 price prediction survey on Dogecoin. It determined if the joke had reached its use or if the cryptocurrency would jump in price.

The experts were to give their Dogecoin price forecast from 2025 up to 2030. According to this panel, “Doge’s value will hit $1.21 on average in the year 2025 and up to $3.60 in 2030.”

However, Finder noted that the currency’s high value was due to “an outlier pulling the average price up” in December 2025. The predictions range between $0 and $10, with an average of $1.21. A senior lecturer at Brighton Business School, Paul Levy gave the highest prediction and valued DOGE at $10. The company noted that 30% of their panelists see DOGE worth more than $1 in 2025.

What Do The Experts Say?

Some experts are pessimistic about this crypto’s future.

Futurist and technologist Joseph Raczynski observe, “Dogecoin price will go to $0 eventually. There are more than 200 crypto projects worth more than Dogecoin.” He opined.

Finder observed that around 15% of the expert panel that provides price predictions” expect that Dogecoin will crest at its elusive $1 mark.”

A Ph.D. candidate at the University of Saskatchewan, Ajay Shrestha, believes the meme coins price might reach $1, “only if Dogecoin receives continuous support from Elon Musk. Otherwise, it can’t get much hype.” CEO Julian Host also believes DOGE will be $1. However, he says,” It will be a dump and pump.”

In the panel, some experts are not as optimistic. University of Canberra senior lecturer John Hawkins predicts that Dogecoin’s price will be $0.15 by 2021. He observes.” DOGE seems dependent largely on Elon Musk’s narrative tweets. It is barely a payment instrument and not the best store of value.

Moreover, the panel details. It’s safe to say the panel feels frustrated about Doge. 80% call the digital coin a bubble, while 10% note it isn’t a bubble and the remaining 10% are unsure.

Final Takeaway

Besides a meme coin, Dogecoin proposes financial freedom, with funds control over banking and governmental entities.

Also, it offers control over assets through the P2P transactions that Bitcoin did before its launch in 2013.

Therefore, DOGE gives over financial assets and financial management to ordinary people and is synonymous with freedom.

Bitcoin (BTC for short) is the first cryptocurrency and most famous of more than 5,000 digital currencies.

We’ve seen financial media cover the dramatic price changes, making BTC inescapable in the landscape. However, it is hardly the best choice for novice investors as it’s an enigma to them.

There are some things that one should know about bitcoin.

What Is Bitcoin (BTC)?

Bitcoin is a digital asset that uses public-key cryptography when signing, recording, and sending transactions over the blockchain.

Launched in Jan 2009 by computer programmer Satoshi Nakamoto (though the identity of Nakamoto is suspect), the Bitcoin network is an electronic peer-to-peer system of payment that uses native cryptocurrency to transfer value online or act as a store of value.

Each BTC contains 100,000,000 satoshis (the smallest units), hence individual BTC are divisible into 8 decimals. It allows people to buy fractions with little amounts as one American dollar. Bitcoin is built on a technology called Blockchain, wherein, as the name suggests, information is carried in a secure chain of blocks. The information available in these blocks can be in the form of contracts, certificates, bonds, and any document of importance. What matters in the transaction is the sanctity of agreement between the parties involved in the transaction.

How Did BTC Gain Popularity?

Bitcoin has crashed and rallied multiple times while paving roads toward decentralized finance. To better understand why Bitcoin has a high status in the world economy, below is an overview of its history.

Satoshi Nakamoto- Bitcoin Genesis

In 2008 during the world’s catastrophic economic turmoil, an anonymous person introduced blockchain technology through a published paper. Under the pseudo name Satoshi Nakamoto, he shared a paper on the cryptography mailing list.

Later the publication spread, primarily to cryptography researchers.

In the paper, Nakamoto showcased the blockchain network and explained how it could improve financial systems, mainly on the Internet. Blockchain technology would offer users the ability to transfer money value through Bitcoin.

The transactions were cryptographically secured and irreversible to allow BTC to become the first viable digital currency in history. Hal Finney, a programmer was the first to receive a Bitcoin transaction.

Beginning of Bitcoin Markets

One year later, most internet users found out that Bitcoin can have value. An anonymous individual proposed a platform to trade Bitcoin called Bitcoinmarket.com. The person introduced what is today officially the first Bitcoin exchange. Though decentralized, BTC was also fragmented. The community could not determine prices, and miners agreed on asset ledgers but not the value. In March 2010, they launched the Bitcoin market.

In the beginning, one Bitcoin was only valued at $0.003.

Mt. Gox

During this time, they introduced a new Bitcoin exchange that could be the biggest in cryptos’ history. In 2011 Jeb McCaleb converted an old website that was called Mt. Gox. Later, he sold the exchange to Mark Karpeles.

Soon, Mt. Gox was the largest crypto trading platform that ended dramatically due to security breaches, negligence, and other deficiencies.

New Cryptocurrencies and First Forks

In 2011, along with an increase in miners, the first blockchain developers came up. The developers introduced projects on the initial Bitcoin source code. In October 2013, Litecoin was created.

Notable Price Events

As an asset, the noteworthy part of its history is the price. Since its introduction in the market, bitcoins prices have been highly volatile for over ten years.

The first event was in February 2011 when Bitcoin reached $1. After a few months, the asset experienced its first bubble to $31 by June. Like other bubbles, this price crashed violently to a single-digit value. In 2013 bitcoins value was $200. In November 2013, it traded around $1,000. Likewise, this price crashed after a few months.

2017: First Major Bitcoin (BTC) Bubble

The digital currency gained a following from miners, technology enthusiasts, and other groups. Bitcoin was to disrupt the world as the first digital currency that introduced decentralization to traditional financial systems.

After turbulent years of price action, investors rallied to faze everyone, including Bitcoin traders. In June 2016, bitcoin was close to its all-time high, valued at $770. In March 2017, due to bullish investors, the value was at $1,345, an all-time high.

BTC later was in the parabolic phase as its value increased many times over. By December 2017, it was at a final ATH of $20,000

Another BTC Crash

After attaining an ATH of $20,000, most early investors were selling profitable possessions in masses. This led to its decline in value. After gaining in a month, the currency continued the previous rally, revisiting prices not seen from 2017. In November 2020, it reached a new yearly high of $19,540.

Where Does BTC Stand Today?

According to Coinbase, bitcoin is the leading cryptocurrency with a market capitalization of over $1.17 trillion. As of 11th October 2021, its price was over $65,000.

What Are Security Concerns around Bitcoin? What Are Experts Saying?

Despite the hype, many wonder whether to invest in Bitcoin since digital currency also creates an array of concerns. Some worry that the currency is a bubble, susceptible to fraud, or too risky to invest, among other problems.

According to CNBC Make it, below is what experts have to say about the concerns.

Is Cryptocurrency Too Risky For Average Investors?

“Compared to other investments, bitcoin is highly risky and volatile,” James Ledbetter, fintech newsletter editor, told CNBC MakeIt.” When you observe bitcoin prices historically, there are occasions that it spiked, then later crashed quickly.”

While that might mean significant returns to others, to some, it’s a big loss. That’s the reason Mark Cuban likens Bitcoin to gambling and recommends investing amounts you can afford to lose.

Despite the high selling price,” you can buy little as $5 of Bitcoin due to fractional shares called satoshis,” points out Anthony Pompliano, a Bitcoin investor.

Are The Bitcoin Wallets Safe?

Due to the widespread Twitter account hacks, there were illegal Bitcoin transfers in hundreds of thousands, which prompted questions on safety.

“There are various cases of BTC fraud and theft that discourage new investors, mostly when investing substantial amounts. I think the fears are legitimate,” Ledbetter advises. But he also found them overblown.

While Bitcoin allows transactions without revealing users’ identities or information, it isn’t anonymous. It is because transactions are documented on the digital ledger called a blockchain. The user wallets are as random letters and numbers on the blockchain.

Through this, you can potentially trace scammers.

“I always remind investors that BTC has public ledgers,” notes Pompliano. Plus, it is challenging to hack due to blockchain. “

Ledbetter also notes, “Traditional stock accounts with brokerage could also be compromised. there’s always potential risk or fraud.”

According to the Federal Trade Commission website, bitcoin scams are popular ways scammers trick people into sending their money, and they mostly appear as chain referral schemes, bogus business opportunities or investments and emails.”

Can BTC Be Easily Converted Into Fiat and Transferred?

Most Bitcoin and mainstream transactions convert Bitcoin to fiat currency like the US dollar. For instance, in 2021, PayPal announced that consumers could use cryptocurrency for purchases. It means that when you pay with Bitcoin, it will instantly convert to fiat currency.

“Currently transferring BTC to other accounts or converting to fiat currencies is quite slow,” notes Ledbetter.

Along with fees,” most sellers lack the confidence to perform large transactions in Bitcoin,” says investor O’Leary.

Pompliano predicts that innovation can lead to technologies for easier Bitcoin spending with cheaper, more usable, and more efficient transactions in the future.

Is The Digital Currency A Bubble?

People believe that the cryptocurrency rally today isn’t reminiscent of the 2017 bubble. Parabolic move in bitcoin in a short period is highly abnormal for any security,” David Rosenberg, a chief economist, told CNBC.

However, bitcoin bulls suggest the 2017 rally is different due to the drive-by retail investor’s speculation, whereas institutional investors that buy the coin drive the current rally.

What Is Next For Bitcoin?

When introduced, Bitcoin was to revolutionalize the finance ecosystem. However, the first decade is marked by wild price swings and missteps.

The next decade can be significant to the Bitcoin revolution in some areas of the ecosystem.

Currently, crypto is poised between a medium of daily transactions and a store of value. Both occurrences are not possible due to security challenges and scaling. Bitcoin should handle large transactions in short periods.
In early 2021, Bitcoins price topped $60,000, later falling to $40,000. Large banks are taking notice of BTC, with BNY Mellon beginning its custody services and Goldman Sachs opening the crypto trading desk.

Conclusion

Today using decentralized and digitized transactions is popular among the masses. Along with safety, Bitcoin delivers the transparency and anonymity that individuals seek through investments.

Moreover, the security and ease of use are reasons more merchants accept cryptocurrency as means of payment.

Until recently, cryptocurrencies were almost exclusively reserved for programmers, engineers, and entrepreneurs involved in its inception.

However, due to the bitcoin bubble in 2017, cryptocurrencies have soared in value leading to many people purchasing crypto shares and some setting up their mining farms.

Due to the release of various creation tools and crypto apps, ordinary citizens became acquainted with crypto and could invest, including celebrities.

Elon Musk supports crypto investments and admits that his private aerospace company SpaceX owns Bitcoin. It is besides Tesla’s $1.5 billion investments in the oldest digital token.

Jack Dorsey, the Square, and Twitter CEO, is a diehard investor of Bitcoin. His love for digital currency began in 2017 while advocating for King coin. Even in 2018, when the crypto market crashed, he was undeterred, calling BTC the future of digital currency.

Besides his bitcoin holdings, Dorsey’s company, Square, invested 4,709 bitcoins under his direction. He also runs Bitcoin nodes to verify and mine transactions on the Bitcoin blockchain.

Dorsey explained during the B-Word conference the reasons for his crypto investments. “what drives my interest and thinking is the likelihood of an internet currency, likely to be bitcoin due to its resilience.”

Dorsey is also hoping digital currency can help create long-term world peace. He also sees Bitcoin as protection against the devaluation of currencies and a means to expedite funds transfer across borders.

Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss are investors in various blockchain-related businesses and cryptocurrencies.

They are believed to be bitcoin billionaires with around 100,000 bitcoins with a value of $ 950 million by June 2020.

Like most investors, they see Bitcoin as a long-term investment option.

The twins launched the Gemini exchange that allows investors to store, sell and buy digital assets. This exchange is a secure option and has grown into a trusted company regulated by the state department of financial services in New York.

Recently they invested in BlockFi, an all-in-one management tool for crypto investors. He is the founder of Galaxy Holdings which advises and manages blockchain related-assets. Recently, he revealed that digital currencies make up 85% of his wealth, which translates to $4.8 billion.

The bitcoin bull predicts the cryptocurrency industry remains in the early days and that the wealth it generates will proliferate into years ahead.

Novogratz noted, “It is like the Netscape moment in the cryptocurrency economy. Netspace in 1995 before the crazy frenzy signaled the beginning of the internet age.” He added, “This is an important day for the crypto world since the assets and its class are here to stay. Therefore, it’s irrelevant how Coinbase trades today.”

According to Shark Tank host and billionaire investor Mark Cuban, Ethereum could be the best cryptocurrency. In this year, it has grown in price and is worth $3,751.57.

Cuban also notes that Ethereum is the closest investment to true currency. For other cryptocurrencies, he recommends dogecoin for educational purposes and fun, CNBC reported.

Over the past years, Kevin O’Leary, also called Mr. Wonderful, has devoted more of his time to the crypto industry. He believes the carbon footprint of Bitcoin holds it back in a world increasingly conscious of social, environmental, and governance issues. According to him, mining Bitcoin has an environmental cost and is the major reason financial institutions haven’t embraced this flagship digital currency.

According to an interview with the capital connection, he expects to increase his crypto investments to 7% from 3% of his portfolio. He claims to know how and where they mined cryptocurrency in his digital wallet. To achieve that, O’Leary has taken positions in mining companies where he bought sustainably mined coins.

Mr. Wonderful first invested in BTC in 2017 and also owns other digital coins like Ethereum.
It holds 114,041 bitcoins, considerably the largest holding by a public company. The company made high profits in its investments as it was among the first to enter the market.

The CEO Mr. Michael Sylor once dismissed Bitcoin but is now a proponent of cryptocurrencies and believes they are important for diversification.

In months following the company’s investments in crypto, MicroStrategy has released statutes to describe its expectations and hopes for Bitcoin.

Saylor notes that BTC is less risky than gold, and the company also believes that more firms will invest in digital currencies in the coming years.

Tesla

A critical factor in the adoption of crypto is the ‘readiness’ that a country must build – infrastructure to support the acquisition, trading, and use of cryptocurrencies.

We’ve collated some insights from various sources to benefit our readers. In case you’re seeking a refresher on cryptocurrencies, please read our blog on key things to know about cryptocurrencies.

Crypto: Facts & Figures

The worldwide adoption of cryptocurrency has risen by 880% in the past year, mainly in India, Pakistan, Vietnam, and some emerging economies, according to Chainalysis.

The company’s 2021 crypto adoption index, called the geography of cryptocurrency, compares the cryptocurrency adoption based on the on-chain value transferred, peer-to-peer (P2P) exchange, cryptocurrency received, and trade volume between 2020 and 2021.

Considering the geometric mean of the three metrics, it ranked 154 countries and normalized the final number on a scale of 0 up to 10 to give each country a score, determining overall rankings. The closer the final score to 1, the higher the country’s rank.

What Does It Mean Country-wise?

Vietnam has the highest adoption of crypto, followed by India with an index score of 0.37, Pakistan with 0.36, Ukraine with 0.29, and Kenya with 0.28.

Compared to last year’s report, Vietnam reached the first rank from position 10, while Ukraine slipped from position 1 to 4. Pakistan and India joined the top 10 countries to adopt crypto this year.

Circumstances leading to a boom in cryptocurrency adoption depend on emerging countries’ economic activities. Nations like Nigeria, Kenya, Vietnam, and Venezuela rank high in the index mainly due to the substantial transaction volumes of peer-to-peer (P2P) platforms and the internet-using population.

Here are the top countries with cryptocurrency adoption.

Vietnam

Vietnam is the top crypto adopter

According to Finder, Vietnam is the top country in crypto adoption, with 41% of its population owning cryptocurrency.

The country has realized that digitizing money is a way forward and the government will allow its citizens to use crypto based on Blockchain technology.

Phnompenhpost reported that Mr. Pham Minh, the Vietnam prime minister directed the formation of regulations that pilot cryptocurrencies based on blockchain in the next two years.

Like many other countries, there are mixed views about cryptocurrencies. Vietnam must still define the legalities surrounding cryptocurrencies, beginning with the definition of cryptocurrencies. Hopefully, with measures taken, Vietnam will be able to make a dent in the global financial markets.

India

After giving cryptocurrency a cold shoulder for many years, India is to launch its digital currency, and investors have reasons to cheer.

This year, according to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) Deputy Governor, the regulatory body is considering the introduction of a Central-Bank-Digital-Currency (CBDC) in a phased manner. The CBDC is legal tender in digital form by the central bank.

In effect, it’s a digital version of fiat currency, which is the rupee in India’s case.

It means that the CBDC is not similar to private virtual currencies like ether, bitcoin, or dogecoin.

“The CBDCs are desirable in payments and also protect the public in the volatile environment of private virtual currencies,” remarked Mr. Rabi Sankar, Deputy Governor, RBI in a keynote address.

While the announcement doesn’t mean RBI has changed hearts on other digital currencies, it will benefit the ecosystem.

There is a growing belief there won’t be an outright ban on private digital currencies in the country.

However, the authorities in India will not allow private cryptocurrencies as legal tender, according to Moneycontrol in July 2021. Digital currencies are to be treated as another tradable asset such as art commodities.

Whether the government bans the use of crypto as a legal tender or introduces a framework that encourages the regulated growth of cryptocurrency is yet to be seen.

Pakistan

               4.1% Pakistanis Own Crypto

There’s a boom in mining and trading cryptocurrency in Pakistan, increasing interest in online exchange transactions. While cryptocurrency is legal, the nation’s money-laundering watchdog, the Financial-Action-Task-Force (FATF), called on the national government to regulate the industry. Pakistan is one the greylist of countries that fail to check money laundering and terror financing.

In response, the government set up a committee to examine cryptocurrency regulation that includes observers from the federal ministry, FATF, and the heads of intelligence agencies. A committee member believes that some of the other members were clueless and didn’t even understand cryptocurrency. However, the relevant government bodies support cryptocurrency as nobody wants to be against technical innovation.

According to euronews.next, the Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan, Mr. Reza Baqir, has said that they are looking into a digital asset, the central bank’s digital currency, and the potential of having transactions off the books to a regulatory framework.

Ukraine

Recent developments in Ukraine demonstrate the country’s focus to promote a blockchain-friendly ecosystem.

At the government level, the newly established Ministry-of-Digital-Transformation (MDT) promotes a regulatory environment, friendly to cryptocurrency or blockchain projects, in both private and public sectors. To further the aim, the MDT began various initiatives to promote blockchain, including hosting a meeting with stakeholders to discuss the status of blockchain-related work streams.

Additionally, the MDT owns fragmented blockchain projects launched in the past five years. As a result, they suggested establishing a framework to promote the use of blockchain technology and implement the financial-action task force guide, the adoption of cryptocurrency legal jargon through the approach of the European central bank, and the adoption of the related tax regime.

Besides the MDT, an inter-fractional association named blockchain4Ukraine was set up by the Ukrainian parliament. The association will collaborate while promoting blockchain through draft laws to be introduced in parliament.

Kenya

In Kenya, the cryptocurrency market is unregulated.

Questions emerge on the borderless nature, regulatory risks, anonymity of crypto transactions, and volatility of its price. Therefore, regulators have a difficult time balancing risk management and promoting market innovations.

The CBK or Central Bank of Kenya regulates cryptocurrency with complete broad discretion and legal avenues. The primary law governing digital currency is the National Payments Systems Act (NPSA) and the Kenya- Money- Remittance regulations.

The remittance regulations need companies handling money transmission to acquire licensing. Therefore, to operate in Kenya, crypto providers must have licenses.

The CMA has the discretion to classify cryptocurrency as securities. For instance, a case involving CMA and Capital Venture ruled that ICO constitutes securities. The company was raising funds for its initial coin offering.

The Kenya-revenue-authority (KRA) also declared that digital currencies are under digital marketplaces, as noted by Global Insights. Therefore the digital tokens need to be subjected to tax at a rate of 1.5% on the gross transaction value.

The Kenyan government is drafting regulations that encompass cryptocurrencies. Luckily the crypto regulations are in many jurisdictions in the continent, majorly South Africa.

Here’s a list of countries that are adopting cryptocurrencies at a commendable pace.

Ranks Of Countries That Have Adopted Crypto, chainalysis.com

A glimpse of region-wise traffic on crypto platforms.

Region-wise traffic on Crypto platforms, chainalysis.com

Countries With A Stance Against Cryptocurrency

While cryptocurrency and Bitcoin are making strides to become mainstream facilitators in payments, they are illegal in many countries. As institutions are increasingly aware of the benefits of technology, many countries are lowering regulatory barriers. However, some still ban digital currencies.

Cryptocurrencies are banned in the following countries:

Algeria: According to the law of the state, the sale, purchase, use, or holding of virtual currency is illegal.

Bangladesh: Anyone owning or using Bitcoin or other digital currencies faces prosecution, according to Bangladesh Bank.

Bolivia: In the state, all cryptocurrencies have been banned since 2014 by the central bank.

Columbia: while no specific law bans altcoins and bitcoins, the Superintendancia Financiera directed financial institutions to avoid working with or aiding companies and individuals trading in digital currencies.

Ecuador: Their government banned the use of cryptocurrencies as it introduced its version that tied the country’s currency to the dollar.

Conclusion

While global adoption is widespread, cryptocurrency regulations are yet to be fully implemented, and financial leaders are still unsure since they have some risks.

In addition, the industry is growing with new technology and coins introduced frequently increasing volatility.

Therefore, experts advise that you examine the risks to avoid permanent losses.

As curiosity kicks in (maybe a little late though, but never too late), we’ve tried to decipher, and hopefully, in a simple way, the key things we need to understand about a cryptocurrency.

Virtual currencies or cryptocurrencies are digital mediums of exchange to trade created by groups or individuals.

Since governments don’t regulate most cryptocurrencies, they are an alternative means of exchange outside the state monetary policy.

Bitcoin is the major cryptocurrency with first-wide applications.

However, there are many digital coins, with more coming up each month. Collectively, non-bitcoin cryptocurrencies are called altcoins to distinguish them.

A Brief History Of Cryptocurrency

The story of the virtual coins began with David Chaum. The Americans developed the system called eCash and later the DigiCash that made economic transactions confidential using cryptography. However, the term cryptocurrency was first used in 1998 when Wei Dai thought about a new payment method with a cryptographic system.

In 2008 during the funding crisis, the coins were fast losing value. In 2009, Satoshi Nakamoto created Bitcoin as the first cryptocurrency.

Many assume Satoshi Nakamoto to be a pseudonym.

The reason was to develop a way of payment to be used internationally without the control of financial institutions. The inspirations were the global financial crisis and the need to see a form of money different from the conventional form.

The Popular Types of Cryptocurrencies

Although Ethereum and Bitcoin dominate cryptocurrency investments, there are over 1,500 cryptocurrencies. This is due to the highly competitive market, making most currencies not gain traction.

According to Coinbase, below are the top-performing cryptocurrencies in 2021.

Bitcoin (BTC)

Market cap: Over $820 billion

BTC is the original cryptocurrency created in 2009.

It runs on a ledger logging blockchain transactions that are distributed in a network of computers. Due to the addition of distributed ledgers, it must be verified by solving cryptographic puzzles.

As of 22nd October 2021, the price was $61,182.81.

The performance of BTC over the years can be illustrated in the graph below.

Market Cap: Over $354 billion

Ethereum is a popular program to developers as a blockchain and cryptocurrency platform due to its applications like smart contracts that execute automatically on certain conditions.

Ethereum has experienced growth in five years, from $11 to about 3,000 by the end of September 2021.

Tether (USDT)

Market cap: Over $68 billion

Unlike other cryptocurrencies, Tether is a stablecoin backed by fiat money such as the euro and the US dollar. It hypothetically retains its value similar to one of these currencies. In theory, this means Tether’s value is stable unlike other cryptocurrencies, and favored by investors wary of extreme volatility.

Cardano (ADA)

Market cap: Over $68 billion

Somehow new to the crypto scene, Cardano is famous for its embrace of proof-of-stake validation.

The method expedites the transaction period and reduces environmental impact and energy usage. It eliminates problem-solving and competitive aspects of verification in other platforms like Bitcoin.

Also, it works like Ethereum as it enables decentralized applications and intelligent contracts powered by its native coin, ADA.

Compared to other crypto coins, it has modest growth. In 2007 the price of ADA was $0.02, while by the end of September 2001, it was $2.10.

The Use Of Cryptocurrencies

(pexels.com)

Cryptocurrencies have grown in past years due to individuals seeking digital assets as alternative capital.

However, below are other uses of cryptocurrencies across different domains.

Money Transfer Via Cryptocurrency

Receiving and making payments at high speed and low cost is a popular application of cryptocurrencies. It is due to venture capital funds, institutional investors, fintech in digital currencies, and distributed ledger technology.

Crypto payments are peer–to–peer (P2P) since users can send and receive payments instantly worldwide without approvals from external sources. Moreover, there are no banking, returned deposits, or overdraft charges.

Store of Wealth

Unlike cash, digital currencies like crypto are a secure alternative way to store wealth that is censorship-resistant. It means that only people with private keys can access the wallets, unlike traditional banks, which are vulnerable to thefts, hacks, and malpractices. Therefore, personal digital wallets can’t be frozen by governments or authorities.

Decorrupting Charities

The donations to charities based on crypto are transparent, cost-effective, and faster than conventional currencies. It is because Blockchain, the underlying technology, enables the transparent flow of information. Besides, cryptocurrency donations send more cash to NGOs as it also facilitates anonymous contributions.

Gaming

Today, crypto-based games are popular since they solve some fraud and transaction problems that players and game developers encounter. Crypto games offer decentralized and streamlined payments that provide ownership to players and encourage more purchases through easy transfers from the games.

Some land-based casinos also use crypto and offer players tokens as a reward for playing.

How to Buy Cryptocurrency?

(pexels.com)

When new to crypto, buying digital coins can seem challenging. Thankfully you can follow the easy steps below.

Choose Crypto Exchange Or Broker

To buy cryptocurrency, you first need a crypto exchange or broker.

A crypto exchange is a platform for sellers and buyers to trade cryptocurrencies. Exchanges charge low fees but have a complex interface, advanced performance charts, and multiple trade types that make them intimidating to new investors.

The common exchanges are Coinbase, Binance.US, and Gemini.

Brokers eliminate the complexities to offer user-friendly interfaces. Some charge higher fees compared to exchanges.

Create And Verify An Account

When you decide on an exchange or broker, you can open up an account. You may need to verify your identity depending on the amount you want to buy and the platform. It’s an essential step against fraud and to meet the federal regulatory requirements.

Without completing the verification process, you may not sell or buy. The platform asks for a copy of your passport or driver’s license. To prove your identity, you upload a selfie.

Money To Invest In Cryptocurrency

To buy crypto, ensure you deposit funds in the account. To deposit, you can link your crypto account to your bank account and authorize a wire transfer or make payments with a credit or debit card. Depending on the broker or exchange and the funding method, you might wait a few days to use the money to buy crypto.

Place Order

Once you have money in the account, you can place the first currency order. When you decide on the currency to buy, enter its symbol, for instance, BTC for Bitcoin, and the number of coins to purchase.

Select Storage Method

Since crypto exchanges lack protection, they risk hacking or theft. Therefore, you need secure storage to place the cryptocurrencies. If buying through brokers, you have little choice in your storage, but you have more options that include hot and cold wallets with an exchange.

Conclusion Of The Cryptocurrency Guide

Investing in cryptocurrency is speculative, and you should commit funds you are comfortable losing. At times, the crypto assets fluctuate significantly due to intense volatility.

Also, investors can trade against sophisticated investors making the experience challenging for new players.
